Menstrual Disorders

Menstruation is a large part of a woman’s life and one of the most important biological processes, as well. Ideally, your menstrual cycle is regular, relatively painless and light — but that’s not always the case.

If you’re suffering from a menstrual disorder, you are not alone. Many struggle with one of the many menstrual disorders, which can impede their lifestyles and get in the way of their life at work, at home, and with their loved ones.

If you think you may be dealing with a menstrual disorder, contact the Orange Blossom Women’s Group to find out how we can help you.

What Are They?

There are several different types of menstrual disorders. These can range from heavy periods to no periods, variations in the menstrual pattern, or more. Any of these menstrual disorders could indicate ovulation issues or other medical problems that should be addressed.

The kinds of disorders can be:

  • Dysmenorrhea: This disorder is severe, frequent and painful cramping during menstruation. Pain typically occurs in the lower abdomen, but it can spread to the lower back and thighs as well.
  • Menorrhagia: During a normal menstrual cycle, most people lose 1 ounce of blood. Menorrhagia is categorized by soaking through at least one pad or tampon every couple of hours, heavy periods that last more than 10 days, or bleeding between periods or during pregnancy.
  • Amenorrhea: This disorder is the absence of menstruation, of which there are two categories. Primary amenorrhea happens when someone doesn’t start menstruating by the age of 16, while secondary amenorrhea happens when menstruation that used to be regular stops for at least three months.
  • Oligomenorrhea: This is a condition where the menstrual cycle is infrequent (more than 35 days apart). This condition is common when someone first begins menstruating and does not yet have a regular cycle.
