Infertility Q & A

What is infertility?

Infertility means that you haven’t conceived a pregnancy after a year of having unprotected sex. In about a third of the cases of infertility, the root cause relates to underlying conditions that affect women’s health.

Another third of infertility cases involve issues with the male partner, and in the remaining third, no cause can be identified.

What causes infertility?

There are many underlying health issues that can affect a woman’s ability to become pregnant. Some cases of infertility occur because of lack of ovulation each month due to blockages from growths or excess scar tissue.

Other common causes of female infertility include:

  • Age
  • Obesity
  • Early menopause
  • Cancer treatments
  • Polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS)
  • Diabetes and other autoimmune diseases

Endometriosis can also lead to infertility. This condition causes endometrial tissue that lines your uterus to grow outside of the structure. The tissue continues to act like it normally does, thickening and thinning as part of your menstrual cycle.

However, because the tissue has no way to leave your body, it gets trapped and can cause pain, infertility, and other health complications.

The team at Orange Blossom Women’s Group works to determine the root cause of your infertility by doing a pelvic exam and diagnostic testing, like an ultrasound and blood work.

How is infertility treated?

Treating infertility depends on its root cause, your overall health, and your age. There are medications available that can stimulate ovulation and regulate your menstrual cycle to make it easier to achieve a pregnancy.

If you have blockages in your fallopian tubes, your provider at Orange Blossom Women’s Group may recommend robot-assisted surgery to remove excess scar tissue or other growths to allow the release of an egg for fertilization.

If you have endometriosis, your provider may also recommend surgery to remove excess tissue growth in and around your uterus.

Your provider continues to work with you after your treatment. If treatment isn’t successful, they can provide a referral to a specialist for reproductive assistance like in vitro fertilization (IVF).
