Obstetrics Q & A

What is obstetrics?

Obstetrics is an area of medical care focused on women’s health during and after pregnancy. It includes regular prenatal care, delivery of your baby, and postpartum follow-up care.

Orange Blossom Women's Group is a full-service women’s health practice that includes an experienced team of board-certified OB/GYNs, advanced nurse practitioners, and certified midwives.

The team works together to provide a happy and healthy pregnancy experience for you. This includes taking into account your wishes for your personal birth plan. The experienced team even offers vaginal birth after cesarean section (VBAC) as a delivery option.

What can I expect during obstetrics care?

When you come in to see the obstetrics team at Orange Blossom Women's Group during your pregnancy, you can expect comprehensive and compassionate care. The specifics of your obstetrics care may depend on your personal pregnancy plan and your health.

Because the team personalizes your obstetrics care, you can expect a lengthy appointment during your first prenatal visit. This first appointment is usually scheduled eight weeks after your last menstrual period.

During this visit, your provider:

  • Confirms your pregnancy
  • Checks your vital signs (blood pressure, heart rate)
  • Measures your weight
  • Performs a physical and pelvic exam
  • Does a Pap smear
  • Runs comprehensive lab work
  • Tests for sexually transmitted diseases (STDs)
  • Reviews your personal medical and gynecological history
  • Reviews your family medical history
  • Reviews your partner’s medical history

Your provider also spends time talking to you about what to expect during your pregnancy and gives you an idea of the frequency of your prenatal visits. Early and ongoing prenatal care ensures a healthy pregnancy for you and your baby.

Your prenatal care also determines if your pregnancy is high risk, which may require more frequent visits with your provider and additional tests. Orange Blossom Women's Group specializes in the management of high-risk pregnancy.

What types of testing can I expect with obstetrics care?

In addition to the testing performed at your initial exam, you can expect a number of other tests and procedures throughout your pregnancy. This includes in-office ultrasound testing, which assesses your baby and your uterus.

Other types of prenatal tests include genetic testing, amniocentesis to rule out chromosomal abnormalities, and glucose screening to check for gestational diabetes.

When it comes to pregnancy, you want a compassionate and caring team by your side. For expert obstetrics care from a team that places your needs first, contact Orange Blossom Women's Group by phone or book an appointment online today
